Lothar Hahn (physicist)

Lothar Hahn (* 1944 ) is a German physicist. From January 1, 2002 until his retirement on March 31, 2010, he was the technical and scientific director of the Society for Plant and Reactor Safety (GRS). On December 20, 2001, he was appointed by the GRS Supervisory Board as the successor to its founder and long-term head Adolf Birkhofer .

Hahn is regarded as one of the critical German nuclear energy experts and became publicly known through his statements on current issues of nuclear safety. He studied physics in Mainz and Kaiserslautern. After a few years in the automotive industry, he started advising the Öko-Institut on nuclear energy issues in 1978 and founded the "Reactor Safety Project Group" there in 1980. In the same year the Federal Ministry of Research assigned him the technical project management of the three-year research program "Analytical further development for the German Risk Study Nuclear Power Plants, Phase A". From 1989 to 1990 he headed the study program of the Enquête Commission of the German Bundestag “Prevention for the Protection of the Earth's Atmosphere”. On behalf of the Federal Government , he was repeatedly a member of the German delegation at international conferences.

Even after moving to the top of GRS, Hahn was a member of many national and international specialist bodies and was a member of the German Reactor Safety Commission (RSK), which was founded in 1958, above all until 2009 . In addition, from 2006 to 2008 he was chairman of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
