The Nuclear Energy Agency ( NEA ) is a semi-autonomous institution within the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to promote the safe, environmentally friendly and economic use of nuclear energy . It is based in Paris .

On December 20, 1957, the European Nuclear Energy Agency was founded by a resolution of the Council of Ministers in order to pool the scientific and financial resources of the Western European countries with a view to a joint nuclear research program. Its statutes came into effect on February 1, 1958, and began operating that same month. Around 80 technicians and scientists are employed. The annual budget is $ 16 million.

The organization operates various nuclear databases, including the database for faults in nuclear facilities, the IRS International Reporting System for Operating Experience , also known as the "IAEA / NEA Incident Reporting System".

Members

The organization currently consists of 31 member states from Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region. Russia joined the NEA on January 1, 2013. The members represent 85 percent of the world's existing nuclear facilities.
