A quote from Lothar Herbst ( translated from Polish ) - his usual answer to the question whether he feels more German or Pole:

“First of all: My name is Lothar Herbst and I am a Silesian. I grew up as a Pole and in that sense I am a Polish patriot - I was imprisoned not for Germany, but for a free Poland. Of course, I kept my mother's language in my heart and don't want anyone to forbid me to do so or to interfere in any other way. "
