Lotuxo Maa languages

The Lotuxo-Maa languages are a subgroup within the East Nilotic languages in the Nilo-Saharan language family . It comprises eight languages ​​spoken in different regions of East Africa and is divided into the Lotuxo group (spoken in South Sudan ) and the Ongamo Maa group (in Kenya and Tanzania ).

  • Lotuxo
    • Lotuko or Otuho, language of the Lotuko - in the south of South Sudan in the Torit district, approx. 135,000 speakers
    • Dongotono - in South Sudan, southeast of Torit, around 6,200 speakers
    • Lango - in South Sudan, Torit district, around 20,000 speakers (not to be confused with the Lango spoken in Uganda )
    • Lokoya - in South Sudan, Torit District, around 40,000 speakers
    • Lopit - in South Sudan, northeast of Torit, around 50,000 speakers
  • Ongamo-Maa
    • Maa - the language of the Maasai and Samburu , in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, a total of around 880,000 speakers
    • Ongamo (Ngasa) - in Tanzania, eastern foothills of Kilimanjaro , only a few speakers left
