Louis Thelemann

Louis Eduard Heinrich Thelemann (born January 15, 1890 in Leer , East Frisia , † January 31, 1953 in Leer ) was a German politician ( SPD ), member of the Lower Saxony state parliament and member of the Hanoverian state parliament .

Life

After attending elementary school, Louis Thelemann completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . He then worked as such from 1907 to 1914 and worked in his traveling years in Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Hungary. In the First World War he was a war participant from 1914 to 1918. He joined the SPD in 1909. In 1919 he took over the chairmanship of the General German Trade Union Confederation in the local group Leer and was the SPD faction leader in the city parliament of Leer and in the district assembly until 1933. During the Nazi era , he was released in 1933 and arrested in May 1933. As a result, he worked again as a carpenter in the Leer region from 1934 to 1945. After July 20, 1944, he was arrested again and taken to the Neuengamme concentration camp . After the end of the war he resumed his political activities, he later became a union secretary, mayor, district committee member and landscape councilor of the Ostfriesische Landschaft municipal association . Thelemann was friends with Hermann Tempel and Wilhelmine Siefkes . Together with Wilhelmine Siefkes, he edited the weekly Volksbote . Together they founded a youth center in the immediate vicinity of their home, in which working-class children could spend their free time. This youth center was closed by the National Socialists and used from then on for the Hitler Youth. In 1957 Wilhelmine Siefkes published the novel Uke asserts itself , which has the life of Louis Thelemann as its content.

He was a member of the Hanover Provincial Parliament and from August 23, 1946 to October 29, 1946 a member of the appointed Hanover State Parliament. From April 20, 1947 to January 31, 1953 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament (1st and 2nd electoral periods).
