Marienkirche (Koninklijke Sint-Mariakerk) in Brussels

Louis Van Overstraeten was a student of Lodewijk Roelandt at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten ( Royal Academy of Fine Arts ) in Antwerp .

Together with his teacher Lodewijk Roelandt, he designed the Church of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwe) in Sint-Niklaas from 1841 to 1842 .

In 1844 Louis Van Overstraeten won the competition organized by the parish council for a monumental church in Schaerbeek . The construction of the Marienkirche (Koninklijke Sint-Mariakerk) began in 1845 and the church was inaugurated on August 15, 1853 as a tribute to Queen Louise-Marie , who had died three years earlier . The Marienkirche has been a listed building since 1976.

In the years 1846–1847 he took part in another competition to redesign the Rue Royale (ndl .: Koningsstraat) and to create the Place du Congrès. Rue Royale goes from St. Mary's Church to Place Royal Bruxelles. In the middle is the Place du Congrès. The city council initially selected the one by Louis Van Overstraeten from the 52 drafts, but this was not implemented after the intervention of Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar and after a bitter dispute

The Sint-Willibrordus Church in Middelkerke was largely demolished in the 19th century and replaced by a neo-Gothic church. Louis Van Overstraeten designed the redesign.

He also left behind a painterly work that testifies to his talent as a landscape painter.

Van Overstraeten was married to Mathilde-Jeanne Roelandt, a daughter of his teacher; they had a daughter Ludovica. Louis Van Overstraeten died of cholera at the age of 31 .

His grave is in the Campo Santo cemetery in Sint-Amandsberg, a district of Ghent. His brother-in-law Joseph Geefs created an angel relief for the grave . Joseph Geefs was married to Adèle Sylvie Roelandt (November 23, 1823 in Ghent, died March 5, 1911 in Antwerp).
