Lourdes Chapel (Matrei in Osttirol)
The Lourdes Chapel is a listed ( list entry ) chapel in the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol . The chapel was built between 1903 and 1904 in Matreier Neumarkt.
history
The Lourdes Chapel was built between 1903 and 1904 on the initiative of Ignaz Niederegger and the cooperator Georg Unterpranger on the site of his quarry. Today it is located below Felbertauern Strasse, which was built in the 1960s, between the houses at Neumarktstrasse 18 and Neumarktstrasse 20.After damage from blasting work that occurred during the construction of Felbertauern Strasse, the chapel was restored in 1976 and 1977. Re-consecrated May 1977 by Dean Josef Holaus. The chapel underwent another renovation in 2015 and 2016. In addition to various renovations including new roofing, the chapel was given a new forecourt with disabled access. The new consecration took place on August 15, 2016 by GV Msgr. Engelbert Guggenberger.
Building
The chapel was built in Gothic form and has a rectangular floor plan with a retracted choir. The entry-side roof turret was rebuilt in 1977 and has round-arched sound openings, four gables and an octagonal helmet, with the roof turret crowned by a ball and cross. The entrance portal was designed as a pointed arched portal and framed with tuff stone. A round window with a tracery rosette made of wood was let into it. The longitudinal walls as well as the choir are broken up by ogival windows.
The interior of the three-bay chapel was provided with a pointed barrel vault with stitch caps. In the niche of the front wall, a Lourdes grotto made of tuff was set up, which houses a figural representation of St. Bernadette in front of the Mother of God. Furthermore, the chapel was equipped with a way of the cross made of colored engravings, a Holy Spirit dove and a bell.
