Low Island ( Spanish Isla Baja , German about "low island" , old names are Jameson Island or Jamesons Island ) is the southernmost island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . The island got its name from seal hunters because of the lack of significant elevations.
geography
Low Island is located in the southwest of the South Shetland Islands, 22.5 km southeast of Smith Island and around 90 km off the Antarctic continent . The island has a length of 16 km, a circumference of almost 64 km and an area of 181.2 km². The flat island is almost completely covered by an ice cap .
