Luís de Sttau Monteiro

Luís de Sttau Monteiro , actually Luís Infante de Lacerda Sttau Monteiro (born April 3, 1926 in Lisbon , Portugal , † July 23, 1993 there ) was a Portuguese writer, playwright, journalist and translator.

Live and act

Monteiro also had Spanish ancestors. At the age of ten he came to London as the son of the then Portuguese ambassador to Great Britain, Armindo Monteiro , where he remained until 1943. His father had been a minister in Portugal several times.

After returning to Portugal, he studied law in Lisbon and worked briefly as a lawyer. His first play appeared in 1960. From 1963 to 1967 he lived again in London, this time in exile, and there married a British woman.

In 1961 his play "Felizmente ha luar!" censored and banned by the Salazar dictatorship . It was not performed until 1978, after the end of the dictatorship ( Carnation Revolution 1974).

In 1962 he came into custody; In 1967 he was arrested for two plays critical of the government and imprisoned for a good year.

Then he returned to Portugal again, where he worked for various journals and magazines.

He wrote gastronomic works under the pseudonym Manuel Pedrosa .

He also worked as a translator for Henrik Ibsen and Shakespeare .

The novel Antiguista para o jantar was made into a series by RTP in 1975.
