Luc Berger (born May 2, 1933 in Morges , Switzerland ) is a Swiss solid-state physicist .

Life

Luc Berger studied at the University of Lausanne , where he received his diploma in 1955 and a doctorate in physics in 1960. As a post-doctoral student he was at Carnegie Mellon University , where he became an assistant professor in 1961, an associate professor in 1963 and a professor in 1973. In 1995 he retired.

In 1973/74 he was visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles .

He deals with the electronic structure of transition metals, ferromagnetism (in iron, nickel, cobalt, their alloys and glasses) and transport processes in ferromagnets, whereby he examines the interaction of electrons with spin waves, domain walls, interfaces of thin films and other disturbances in magnetic spin -System investigated via the sd exchange energy and hydromagnetic forces and anisotropic scattering at magnetized chemical impurities via the spin-orbit interaction energy.

In 2013 he and John Slonczewski received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize for the prediction of spin transfer moments and the establishment of the field of current-induced control over magnetic nanostructures (laudatory speech). He is a life member of the IEEE .
