Luc Constant Hélène Van den Brande (born October 13, 1945 in Mechelen ) is a Belgian politician ( CD&V ). He was Prime Minister of Flanders from February 21, 1992 to July 13, 1999 .

Life

Luc Van den Brande received a doctorate in law from the Catholic University of Leuven , where he also received a notary's degree. From 1970 to 1988 he worked as a lawyer at the Mechelen Court of Justice. He is married to Maria Baelus, three children and six grandchildren.

Political career

He is a member of the Belgian Senate .

Van den Brande has been President of the Committee of the Regions since February 2008 . He has been a member of the committee since 1994 and was Vice-President from 1994 to 1998 and from 2000 to 2002. From 2006 to 2008 he was First Vice President. He was also head of the Belgian delegation from 2000 to 2006.

In 2000 he was awarded the Kaiser Maximilian Prize for his services to a Europe of Regions .

Political opinions

As Prime Minister of Flanders, he called for more independence for Flanders and saw himself as an “advocate for a confederal Belgium”. This statement earned him a reprimand from the Belgian Queen.
