Lucas Cranach III.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucas Cranach III. (* March 6, 1586, probably in Wittenberg ; † before September 15, 1645 in Wittenberg ) was a German painter .

Life

The eldest son of Augustin Cranach and his wife Maria Selfisch continued the Cranach workshop. No works have yet been assigned to him. Possibly he was one of the hitherto anonymous painters of the so-called Dürer Renaissance who had specialized in imitating the old masters . If the Cranach workshop was still painting in the tradition of the older and younger Lucas Cranach at that time , then perhaps one can assign him the better works in Cranach manner, which with some probability were not painted until after 1600. He was married to Martha Hildebrand (* July 24, 1586 in Wurzen, † April 18, 1624 in Wachsdorf).

In his second marriage he was connected to Sibylla Richter from Delitzsch, who after his death on September 21, 1647 the physician Dr. Marcus Bantzer from Vienna got married. Cranach's daughter Martha Margarita Sybilla was adopted by Bantzer and married the Wittenberg theologian, historian, mathematician and astronomer Aegidius Strauch II.
