Cranach the Younger 2015 was a state exhibition in Saxony-Anhalt , which was shown from June 26 to November 1, 2015 at various locations in Wittenberg , Dessau and Wörlitz .

Theme and concept

The occasion of the national exhibition was the 500th birthday of the painter Lucas Cranach the Elder. J. (1515-1586). The show was intended to introduce him to the public as a multifaceted personality: as a caring head of the family, a respected councilor and successful entrepreneur. Above all, however, she drew attention to the artist Cranach, who was in no way inferior to the painting skills of his famous father .

The focus of the state exhibition was the show "Lucas Cranach the Younger - Discovery of a Master", which was shown in the Augusteum of Lutherstadt Wittenberg, a renovated former university building. Around 120 works from the painters' workshop of Cranach were presented to visitors on around 850 square meters of exhibition space. The exhibition in the previously renovated front building of the Luther House focused primarily on the artist Cranach, but also presented him in his functions as councilor, entrepreneur and father of a family.

The Luther Memorials Foundation was responsible for organizing and supervising the exhibition . The exhibition was conceived both with the Foundation's own works and with numerous loans from international collections such as the National Museum Oslo or the Museum of Fine Arts Houston . The highlight of the exhibition was 13 precious portrait drawings by Lucas Cranach the Elder. J., which were brought to Wittenberg from Reims on loan from the Musée des Beaux-arts .

The state of Saxony-Anhalt funded the state exhibition with a total of around 1.3 million euros.

The state exhibition was embedded in the theme year "Reformation - Image and Bible" of the Luther Decade , with which the Reformation anniversary in 2017 was prepared.
