Luchsstein (Saxon Switzerland)

Lynx stone

The lynx stone is a memorial stone from 1743 in Saxon Switzerland . It is located in the corridor of Ottendorf and stands southeast of the Raumberg on the border with the Czech Republic in Ziegengrund, a small side valley of the Kirnitzschtal . The memorial stone commemorates the last lynx documented to have been hunted in Saxon Switzerland .

A large sandstone block about 2.20 m high in the goat ground served as the base of the memorial stone . The relief of a lynx and a memorial inscription were carved into these. The inscription is carved out of the stone in the form of an approximately oval medallion. It is:

"Here I have Joh. Gottfr. Puttrich Königl. Forester from Hinterhermsdorf killed a lynx with a self-shot ao 1743 "

- quoted from Rölke

Until 1785, however, there were still lynxes on the left Elbe in neighboring Bohemian Switzerland . This year, the last lynx was hunted near Kristin Hrádek , north of Děčínský Sněžník (High Snow Mountain) on February 4th.

Since around the 1960s there have been regular observations of lynx in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . At the end of 2010 and in February 2011, lynx traces were clearly documented again near Hinterhermsdorf .
