The Raumberg is a striking mountain in Saxon Switzerland in Saxony .

Location and surroundings

The Raumberg is located on Ottendorfer Flur three kilometers south of Hinterhermsdorf in the Upper Saxon Switzerland near the state border with the Czech Republic . The deeply cut Kirnitzschtal runs directly north of the mountain . After the Second World War , a wooden survey tower was built on the summit, the remains of which are still visible.

The Raumberg is part of the core zone of the Saxon Switzerland National Park .

geology

The Raumberg is one of the few basaltic cone mountains in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . In the Tertiary, basalt penetrated the sandstone as liquid magma along fissures and faults . Most of the time, however, such melts got stuck in the sandstone slab and cooled there. Over millions of years, the erosion carried away the surrounding soft sandstone more than the hard basalt, so that today the Raumberg towers over the landscape as a striking, almost circular dome.

Paths to the summit

A visit to the mountain has not been permitted since the Saxon Switzerland National Park was established. The old, historical ascent (Raumbergkuppenweg) led from the east in a counterclockwise direction around the mountain to the summit.

view

Because of the large amount of forest there is no view from the Raumberg.
