Lucien Halter (born September 1, 1911 in Hoenheim , † May 24, 1985 ibid) was a French football player who was active in the 1930s for the clubs Racing Strasbourg and FC Mulhouse .

Career

In 1929, Halter was accepted into the first team of Racing Strasbourg, which then competed in the regional championship of Alsace . Nationwide leagues did not exist until 1932 with Division 1, a France-wide professional league was introduced. Unlike regional rival FC Mulhouse, Racing was not one of the founding members of the new first division. The player, who was mainly used in the right midfield , then decided to move to Mulhouse. He was called up when his team was defeated on September 11, 1932 in the opening game with 2: 3 against the capital club Club Français . A special feature only given in the opening year was the division of the top French league into two different seasons. The Alsatians were part of Group A and had to play 18 games. Halter did not miss an encounter, but could not prevent Mulhouse from finishing last among the ten teams in the group and thus had to relegate at the end of the 1932/33 season. The descent took place in Division 2 , which was introduced in 1933 as a further professional league below Division 1.

In the run-up to the 1933/34 season, Halter decided to return to Racing Strasbourg, which was also one of the founding members of the second division. He himself was one of the pioneers of the first as well as the second highest division. At Strasbourg he got a permanent place straight away and reached the promotion relegation with the team as well as Mulhouse in 1934. Ultimately, both Alsatian clubs made the leap to the top class. After the ascent, Strasbourg immediately developed into a top team, with Halter keeping his permanent place. In addition to the runner-up in 1935 and a third place in 1936, the team made it into the French Cup final in 1937 . The midfielder led the Alsatians onto the field as captain, but had to experience a 1: 2 defeat against FC Sochaux , which after the good performance in the league, a possible title win was again just missed. In the seasons 1937/38 and 1938/39 he stayed with Strasbourg clearly behind the top group of the first division. The beginning of the Second World War led to the cessation of regular game operations in 1939 and thus also ended Halter's professional career. In the course of this he had played a total of 185 first division games (18 for Mulhouse and 167 for Strasbourg) without scoring his own. He could not show a call to the French senior team, but he had been part of France's B national team at times.
