Lucius Minucius Basilus
Lucius Minucius Basilus (* approx. 85 BC; † 43 BC ) was a Roman politician and soldier in the wars of the outgoing republic . He belonged to the group of Caesar murderers .
Minucius Basilus was a legate of Gaius Julius Caesar during the conquest of Gaul and apparently also in the civil war . At the end of this, however, he felt offended by Caeser, because he gave him his praetur in 45 BC. Did not allocate a province and instead offered only a sum of money as thanks for his services. For this reason he turned to the conspirators around Gaius Cassius Longinus .
On the Ides of March , Minucius Basilus stabbed the dictator with such vehemence that he injured Marcus Rubrius Ruga , another of the conspirators. In the year after the coup, Basilus was killed by his own slaves, apparently in revenge for the mutilation done to them.
He was also in correspondence with Marcus Tullius Cicero , who conveyed enthusiastic congratulations to him after the successful assassination attempt on Caesar:
- Tibi gratulor, mihi gaudeo; te amo, tua tueor; a te amari et, quid agas quidque agatur, certior fieri volo.
