Life

Zuccolo of the concept of "is particularly important for an early mention reason of state " known, namely in the "politiche Considerazioni e morali" of 1621. In the overwritten with "Della ragion di stato" section he argued that the raison d'etat, understood as a precaution, to connect with honesty and justice.

Its importance for modern state reasons research is based on the central role that Benedetto Croce assigned him in his book Storia dell'età barocca in Italia (first published in 1929). Today, for example, Maurizio Viroli points out that Zuccolo stood out from the thinkers of the 16th and 17th centuries in that he did not see politics as immoral or amoral, but that even the tyrant could speak of political wisdom . Viroli explains: "[...] prudence was the capacity to decide what was most appropriate for the preservation of the state." Viroli comes from the school of Quentin Skinner and JGA Pocock .

There is little information about Zuccolo's life, neither the dates of life nor the place of birth are certain. Numerous spellings have also been handed down for his name. In the German reception of Friedrich Meinecke, for example, it is referred to as Ludovico Zuccoli , but Ludovicus Zuccolus is also used. Common forms of his name are Lodovico, Ludvicus and Lodvico. In Germany there is mainly the Latin translation of his work from 1621 by Johann Garmers as “Dissertation de ratione status” from 1663, from which the spelling Zuccoli comes.
