Ludwig Erhard Center (new building)

The Ludwig Erhard Center in Fürth is a museum in memory of the Federal Chancellor Ludwig Erhard who was born in Fürth . It is intended to convey the life and work of Erhard and the social market economy to a broad public and to unite political, historical and economic education. The establishment of a research center is planned. The initiator, idea generator and supporter of the project is the Ludwig-Erhard-Initiativkreis Fürth e. V .

The museum consists on the one hand of the renovated birthplace of Erhard and on the other hand of the new building on the other side of the street next to the Fürth town hall . The house where he was born at Ludwig-Erhard-Straße 5 is listed as an individual monument and as part of the Old Town ensemble .

Construction of the new building began in 2015, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in November 2016, and the inauguration took place on May 18, 2018. The opening took place on June 20, 2018, the 70th anniversary of the Trizone currency reform of 1948 .

Federal program for national urban development projects

One of the national urban planning projects is the “development of the house where Ludwig Erhard was born into a center for documentation, encounters and research on Ludwig Erhard and the social market economy”. In November 2014, the project was one of 20 out of around 270 project applications that received approval for implementation within the 2014 federal program.

financing

Originally the project was supposed to cost 12 million euros; In 2014, the planned construction costs rose to 15 million euros, 13 million of which were to be financed by taxpayers' money from the federal government, the state and the city, the rest coming from donations. In 2017 the cost increased further to 17.4 million.

The Ludwig Erhard Center belongs to the Ludwig-Erhard-Haus Foundation (founded in 2013 in Fürth) and is also operated by it; the running costs of 800,000 euros annually are to be borne by tax revenues.

architecture

An architectural realization competition was held to design the new building, the results of which were assessed by a jury in October 2013. Initially, only the then home curator Alexander Mayer criticized the result as a break with the historical environment, but now the architecture in Fürth is generally meeting with reservations.
