Ludwig Adrian Sanders , also short Adrian Sanders (born August 31, 1867 in Rotterdam , † December 24, 1956 in The Hague ) was a Dutch civil engineer and contractor.

biography

Sanders attended the craft school in The Hague. He then worked for Pletterij Enthoven & Co. and, after military service, for the New African Trade Cooperative (Nieuwe Afrikaansche Handelsvennootschap) in the Congo, building ships and buildings. After returning in 1893, he was a draftsman for the city of The Hague, where his boss taught him mechanics. In 1895 he became a technical officer in the Ijzer cement works in Amsterdam. Sanders is one of the pioneers of reinforced concrete in the Netherlands, about which he published in the magazine De Ingenieur and partially taken over into the German magazine Beton und Eisen . In his company was then promoted to engineer. A forerunner of the later Schollenbrug in Amsterdam (built in 1933) is one of his buildings. In 1909 he became director of the Nederlandsche Beton-IJzerbouw, which he founded.

From 1895 he carried out experiments on reinforced concrete on a scale of 1: 1. He was the first to apply the material tests on the elastic behavior (stress-strain curve) of concrete by Carl von Bach and his student Ludwig Schüle (1860–1925) to the concrete tension zone and not only concentrate on the concrete compression zone.

In 1902 he developed a plan, published in 1907, for the poldering of the Zuidersee with a reinforced concrete dam ( Bijdrage tot de oplossing van het Zuiderzee-vraagstuk , The Hague 1907). Together with his brother Anton Johan, who died in 1909, he developed so-called metallized concrete with color effects. This was first implemented in 1917 in a garden house in Utrecht.

In 1954 he proposed a dam for the closure of the sea route from Westkapelle on Walcheren to Rockanje on Voorne-Putten as part of the delta plan .

He married Johanna Helen Roth in 1897. His son of the same name, Ludwig Adrian Sanders Jr., was also an engineer.

In 1913 he received an honorary doctorate from the TH Dresden.
