Ludwig Merz (local history researcher)

Ludwig Merz (born December 24, 1908 in Heidelberg , † 2003 in Mosbach ) was a senior teacher and city historian from Heidelberg.

Life

The son of a locomotive driver grew up in the west of Heidelberg . He graduated from high school in 1927. From 1928 he attended the teacher training institutes in Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. In the year of his marriage, 1934, he became head of the HJ- Kulturstelle Heidelberg. In the years 34/35 he worked for youth and school radio in the Reich Youth Leadership (Berlin). From 1934 and then again after the Second World War, in 1954, teacher in Wieblingen . From 1940 he did military service as a non-commissioned officer. Merz came first into American, from May to September 1945 into British captivity

Act

From 1955 Merz was a teacher at the Rottmann School Handschuhsheim . From 1969 until his retirement in 1973 he held a teaching position at the Pedagogical Institute of the Heidelberg University of Education . There he was a lecturer in handicrafts for primary school teachers.

As a local researcher, he devoted himself extensively to research into Roman, medieval and early modern Heidelberg. He was a co-founder of the Heidelberg History Association and the Heiligenberg Protection Association . In addition to guided tours on the city and state history and lectures for the Südwestdeutscher Rundfunk , Merz wrote around 160 papers on Heidelberg topics. At his suggestion, numerous memorial stones and display boards in the city go back, including the entire historical path in the Heidelberg city forest.

For his services he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1969 and the Heidelberg Citizens' Medal in 1996. In December 2001 he was also made an honorary citizen of the Heidelberg University of Education.
