Ludwig Pfau I (around 1547; † August 7, 1597 in Winterthur ) was a Swiss potter , painter and politician from Winterthur. He is the founder of the Pfau stove-making dynasty.

Life

The Pfau family was first identified by Jos Pfau. He moved from Öhningen (Germany) to Winterthur in 1500 , is mentioned for the first time in Winterthur's tax books in 1526 and received citizenship of the city in 1539.

The date of birth of Ludwig I himself is not known; he was first mentioned in Winterthur's tax books around 1568, which suggests a birth around 1547. In the same year, his activity as a stoner is documented for the first time when he painted three ovens in the town hall of Winterthur in 1568 . The oldest still preserved tiled stove, which can probably be attributed to Ludwig Pfau, is a stove manufactured in 1574 for Mörsburg Castle , which is now in the small hall.

Another well-known furnace was in the Breitenlandenberg Castle in Turbenthal, which was razed at the beginning of the 18th century . Individual painted faience tiles of this stove are today in the Swiss National Museum and in the Winterthur Trade Museum . A joke drinking vessel by Ludwig Pfau dates from 1584 and was printed in the form of a book.

Ludwig Pfau held several offices in the city: in 1567 he was a member of the city council, in 1569 he was a fire showers and in 1596 donation master.

The Hafner died on August 7, 1597 in Winterthur. On the occasion of his death, the following line was dedicated to him in the church book: «a vastly artificial master vff sinem Haffnergwerk». Six sons of Ludwig Pfau I are known who also practiced the pottery trade: Hans Heinrich I (* December 28, 1559), Anton (* January 17, 1563), Onophrion (* October 20, 1564), Johann Jodokus ( * November 27, 1570), Ludwig II (* February 4, 1573) and Hans Jakob (* September 4, 1579).
