Kerem Schalom (Hebrew: כרם שלום, German: Vineyard of Peace ) is a kibbutz in the regional administration of Eshkol and a border crossing named after it near the Gaza Strip and Egypt .
location
The kibbutz is located in the three-country corner of Egypt , Israel and the Gaza Strip . The name of the kibbutz includes the word shalom (which means, among other things, peace), as the members believed that the location would play a role in the peace of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
history
The kibbutz was founded in 1966 by members of the Hashomer Hatzair and belongs to the HaArtzi association. The kibbutz was abandoned in 1996 but was re-established in 2001.
Its proximity to the Gaza Strip meant that it was exposed to Palestinian mortar attacks. The kidnapping of Gilad Shalit on June 25, 2006 also happened near the kibbutz.
In 2018, the kibbutz had 157 residents who make a living from agriculture and poultry farming.
Residents
In the censuses of May 19, 1972, June 4, 1983, November 4, 1995 and December 28, 2008, the Israeli Central Statistical Office gives the following population figures for the kibbutz:
Year of the census | 1972 | 1983 | 1995 | 2008 |
Number of inhabitants | 55 | 101 | 21st | 81 |
Border crossing
The transition is managed on the Israeli side by the Israel Airports Authority . The Palestinian side is run by two families on behalf of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Ramallah coordinates operations with Israel.
On April 19, 2008, three Palestinian suicide bombers detonated a vehicle loaded with explosives. 13 Israeli soldiers were injured and two jeeps and one armored personnel carrier were damaged.
In 2010 the crossing was rebuilt for 75 million NIS and now allows the handling of 450 trucks per day in each direction.
On January 10, 2018, the Israeli Air Force blasted a tunnel that protruded 180 meters from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. The tunnel ran from the city of Rafah below the border crossing. Gas and fuel pipelines and an Israeli military post were also located above the corridor.
On May 11, 2018, Palestinian rioters destroyed equipment in the Kerem Shalom crossing during a series of unrest at night . They smashed assembly lines and security cameras and burned the terminal for petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Hamas did not intervene. Due to the destruction, the last remaining passage of goods to the Gaza Strip was temporarily closed.
