Ludwig Semrad (* 1907 in Teschen ; † December 7, 1984 ) was an Austrian tobacco manufacturer and was honored in 1979 as Righteous Among the Nations .

Life

In 1941 he was entrusted with the management of a Polish cigarette factory that was previously owned by Jews and was confiscated. There he left the management of the Reuven Wolkowitz factory to the Jewish director. However, he tried to employ as many Jewish laborers as possible in order to protect them from deportation to various concentration camps . In June 1944 the Gestapo began to persecute him. With further help for the Jewish prisoners, he exposed himself to danger and suffered financial losses. Since he stayed in Poland after the end of the war, he received financial compensation. Before that, however, because he was a German citizen, he was taken to a concentration camp in Poland. His release could only be obtained with great effort and with many testimonies. Immediately after his release, he and his wife moved to Salzburg, and later to Vienna as a bank director. On January 11, 1979, he was awarded the Righteousness Among the Nations award.

His wife, Wanda Semrad , is also an Austrian Righteous Among the Nations and worked with the Polish underground during wartime.
