Ludwigsbrunnen
Depiction of the Ludwigsbrunnen by Thomas William Gaspey 1866

The Ludwigsbrunnen is the oldest fountain in the spa gardens of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . It is listed as a cultural monument .

In 1809, two children playing at the Kirdorfer Bach discovered this healing spring and tried the sour, but refreshing tasting water. In 1809/10, at the instigation of Landgrave Friedrich V. Ludwig, the spring was bordered to the fountain and initially designated as Oberer or Salzbrunnen, then renamed Ludwigsbrunnen in his honor in 1835. At that time the fountain was surrounded by a double ring of Italian poplars. The water from the Ludwigsbrunnen was sold and shipped as mineral water from 1810.

Due to the shallow location of the spring, the fountain had to be re-drawn and renewed several times between 1824 and 1871 (including 1901/02, 1933, 1977). The six-sided red sandstone posts connected to each other with cast iron grids were created in 1836. The rock grotto opposite the stairs, of which only remains can be seen since the tap was raised, dates from 1871 (including the information board on site) or 1851.

This spring, located in the area of today's spa park, was already known to the Romans, which has been proven by finds and consecration offerings.

According to the signs on site, the water in the well is a sodium chloride acid or a sodium calcium acid with a temperature of 12.1 degrees at 19.2 l / min.
