Air blade

Air blade from HTK-Vent

The air blade is a nozzle with a rectangular cross-section from which a rapid jet of air emerges. The air jet resembles the shape of a blade , about 0.3 cm high and 10 to 150 cm wide and is a laminar flow . Other names are also air knife, air sword, air brush or air knife.

A powerful fan transports as much air volume as possible with little pressure. In the air blade, the cross-section becomes smaller and smaller so that the air flows out at the same pressure at each exit point. According to Bernoulli's equation , there is a high flow velocity in the outlet opening. This rapid air jet is used in industry to clean objects or separate light parts from heavier ones.

There are also air blades operated with compressed air , with which a high inlet pressure (approx. 6 bar) exits through a very narrow gap and sucks in a lot of air from the environment, which increases the air flow at least 40 times.

In recent years, traditional reciprocating compressors have been replaced by high-speed turbo blowers as drives for air blades. These are characterized by an increased degree of efficiency.

Applications

  • When filling beverages , the bottles or cans are blown off and dried. The engine output is 7–15 kW
  • In milling machines , chips are blown away from the machining area. The engine output is up to 110 kW
  • Support with electrostatic discharge and cleaning of plastic parts. ( Parts cleaning )
  • Drying hands after washing ( hand dryer )
  • Removal of residual moisture on surfaces
  • Cleaning and blowing off circuit boards
  • Even distribution of substances on surfaces
  • Separation of air masses like an air curtain
