Harpstedt air ammunition plant

The Luftmunitionsanstalt Harpstedt was an ammunition plant ( Muna ) of the German Air Force near Dünsen in the district of Oldenburg during the time of National Socialism . In the post-war period , the area in the forest was used by the German Armed Forces , the Dutch Armed Forces and the US Army .

The preparatory work for the Harpstedt air munitions facility began in 1934, and construction actually began in 1935. The facility was built in a forest area north of the village. In the ammunition plant, mainly bombs and grenades for anti-aircraft guns were fitted with fuses, stored and prepared for dispatch to units and units of the Luftwaffe.

From the end of the 1950s, the Bundeswehr gradually took over individual areas of the property. It was not until the late 1970s that the entire site was cordoned off as a military area again.

Starting from 1961 the deployment of the accompanying battery takes place the rocket artillery battalion 112 in the district Adelheide in Delmenhorst in Barbara barracks . From February 1963 the 5th US Army Field Artillery Detachment was housed here, which was subordinate to the 552nd US Army Artillery Group . From 1963 onwards they guarded the stored nuclear weapons together . These were warheads of the Honest John missile system , later projectiles for 155 and 203 mm artillery pieces for the 11th Panzer Grenadier Division .

 Conventional ammunition was stored in the neighboring local ammunition defeat 241/2. There was also a large fuel depot.

In the early 1990s, the special ammunition depot and the local ammunition defeat were dissolved. There has been no military use since the late 1990s. In 2005 a civilian buyer was found.
