The air purification tower Xi'an ( Chinese 大型 太阳能 城市 空气 清洁 综合 系统 , HSALSCS for short , German: Large solar urban air purification system; colloquial Chinese 霾 塔 , German: "Dunstturm") is an experimental air purification system in Xi'an , China . It was put into operation in January 2018.

Layout and function

The facility consists of an approximately 100 meter high tower surrounded by a glass surface the size of half a football field (around 0.5  hectares ). It works in a similar way to a updraft power plant : the air is heated under the glass surface like in a greenhouse and rises through the convection in the tower. It passes through several filters before it flows out again after being cleaned. According to the operator, over 10 million cubic meters of air are cleaned every day. In an area of around 10 square kilometers, a reduction in fine dust concentrations of up to 15% has been proven.

Such a system is classified as end-of-pipe technology .
