Layer of air
An air layer is a (mainly horizontally) extended area of the earth's atmosphere , which is characterized by the properties of humidity, aerosol content and equivalent potential temperature. Different wind speeds can occur within an air layer .
Individual air layers are often separated in the vertical direction by temperature jumps ( inversions ), humidity jumps or a change in the stratification stability; In a stable layer of air there is a temperature decrease of less than 1 ° C per 100 meters. In an unstable layer of air, on the other hand, the temperature decreases by more than 1 ° C per 100 meters.
The phenomenon of the Fata Morgana is created by deflecting the light in layers of air of different temperatures, one on top of the other .
