Luigi Gianella

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luigi Gianella , spelling of the first name also Louis , Luis or Lodovico (* before 1778, † around 1817 in Paris ) was a composer and flautist who probably came from Italy .

Life

The life of Luigi Gianella is only partially known. Presumably from Italy, he was first mentioned in 1790, when two of his balli were performed at La Scala in Milan , which is why the often mentioned year of birth 1778 seems implausible. On the libretto print of his staged cantata Arianna in Nasso , performed in Padua in 1800, which was previously believed to be lost , he was listed as rinomato Professore di flauto . On the occasion of a funeral for Domenico Cimarosa , a flute concerto, the Concerto lugubre , was performed by Gianella in January 1801 . Shortly afterwards he moved to Paris, where he became principal flutist in various theaters in the city, such as the “Théâtre de la rue de la Victoire”. In 1803 his first opera, L'officier cosaque, had its Paris premiere.

Gianella composed several operas and ballets. In addition, numerous compositions for the flute have come down to us, including several concertos and chamber music, including a quartet for 4 flutes in G major op. 52.
