Gottfried IV (Anjou)

Gottfried IV. (* Around 1073; † May 19, 1106 ), called Martel , was a hereditary count of Anjou . He was the eldest son of Count Fulko IV the quarrel and his second wife, Ermengarde von Bourbon .

Gottfried took part in revolts of the vassals Anjous against his unpopular father. He was supported by his friend Elias de La Flèche , whom Gottfried assisted in the fight against the Normans for Maine . In 1103 he took Angers and forced his father to join him in the reign. In 1106 Gottfried died during the siege of the rebellious castle in Candé after he was hit by a poison arrow.

Gottfried was betrothed to the County Maine heiress , Eremburge de La Flèche. She was later to marry his half-brother Fulko the younger .
