Luigina Giavotti
Luigina "Gina" Giavotti (born October 12, 1916 in Pavia ; † August 4, 1976 ) was an Italian gymnast who won the silver medal in the team all-around at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam .
Life
Giavotti, born in 1916 in Pavia, in southwestern Lombardy , took part in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam as a member of the 12-man Italian women's gymnastics team, where she won the silver medal in the team all-around competition with the eleven other girls from the province of Pavia won. Gina Giavotti, also known as Popolo because she lived in one of the suburbs of Pavia, was not only the youngest Italian gymnast at the age of eleven and 302 days, but is still the youngest medalist at the modern Olympic Games to this day. This age record can no longer be broken, since over the years the age limit for participation in the gymnastics competition has been raised to 16 years. On their return to Italy, each of the twelve gymnasts of the very young team, the oldest participant was only 16 years old, received a pair of plastic sneakers and a savings account with 100 lire as recognition. Like her eleven teammates, Giavotti belonged to the Società Ginnastica Pavese, which was founded in 1879 and still exists today . In 1976 Luigina Giavotti died at the age of 59.
