Karl Alfons Penecke (born April 28, 1858 in Graz , † probably 1944 in Czernowitz ) was an Austrian entomologist , geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Karl Penecke, son of a kuk captain , studied geology in Graz and received his doctorate there in 1883 . In 1886 he completed his habilitation in geology and palaeontology and was then unpaid private lecturer in Graz for 23 years . After the death of Constantin von Ettingshausen (1826–1897) he also taught palaeobotany in Graz . In 1901 he became adjunct professor and in 1909 extraordinary professor at the University of Czernowitz and in 1918 full professor. Nothing is known about his death; he probably died in Chernivtsi in 1944 under Russian occupation.

As a paleontologist, he dealt with mollusks of the Tertiary and corals of the Paleozoic Era ( Devonian ) and geographically with Styria (around Graz) and Carinthia and Slavonia . As an entomologist, he dealt with weevils (for which he was internationally recognized as an expert) and cave-living beetles, and he got some initial descriptions.

His beetle collection came to the Entomological Reichsanstalt in the State Museum for Animal Science in Dresden .
