Luis Alberto Moreno Mejía (born May 3, 1953 in Colombia ) is a Colombian politician and has been President of the Inter-American Development Bank since 2005 .

biography

After attending school, he studied business administration and economics at Florida Atlantic University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent postgraduate course at the American Graduate School of International Management at Thunderbird University in 1977 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

For the news program TV Hoy , which he produced between January 1982 and September 1990 , he received several awards for journalistic achievements. For his outstanding work in the field of journalism he received the Neiman Fellowship and was able to conduct research studies at Harvard University from September 1990 to June 1991 .

From 1991 to 1994 he held leading positions in government during the presidency of César Gaviria . First, from December 1991 to July 1992, he was President of the Institute for Industrial Promotion IFI ( Instituto de Fomento Industrial ), the industrial finance company and holding of some of the largest public companies in the country. In this position he initiated a successful privatization program and also developed new financing instruments for private industry in order to benefit from the economic liberalization policy of the Gaviria government.

President Gaviria then appointed him Minister for Economic Development in July 1992. During his tenure, he modernized the ministry and its subordinate authorities, while also leading the introduction and implementation of industrial policy and the strategy of competitiveness . As minister he was also responsible for the government's social investment policy, particularly for the strategy of housing construction for low wage earners .

After leaving the government, he became leader of the presidential campaign of Andrés Pastrana in January 1994 , who was defeated by Ernesto Samper .

Between November 1994 and August 1997 he was Senior Advisor to the Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo Group, Colombia's leading banking and finance group with assets of US $ 10 billion, from August 1997 to July 1998 he was representative for the Andean region of WestSphere Capital , a private equity - company , which mainly with the opportunity investments in Latin America addressed.

Between July 1998 and 2005 he was Ambassador to the United States, at a time when there was noticeable improvement in diplomatic relations between the two countries. Moreno was named after Enrique Iglesias on October 1, 2005 for the first time for a five-year term as President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). On July 6, 2010, he was re-elected for a second five-year term at a special meeting of the Board of Governors. As President of the IDB, he also acts as Chairman of the Management Board of the Inter-American Investment Company (IIC) and as Chairman of the Allocation Committee of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF).

He has received several awards for his services, including the Grand Cross of the Order de Boyacá , Colombia's highest honor, on August 2, 2002 .

He has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2016 .
