Enrique Valentín Iglesias García [ enˈrike iˈɣlesi̯as ] (born March  30, 1930 in Arancedo ) is a Uruguayan economist and politician of Spanish origin.

Biography and career

Iglesias was born in Asturias , Spain in 1931 . In 1934 his family emigrated to Uruguay. Iglesias, who in the meantime received Uruguayan citizenship, successfully completed an economics and administration degree in Montevideo. He then deepened his studies in the USA and France. From 1952 to 1967 he lectured at the Instituto de Estudios Económicos of the Chair of Economic Development at the University of Montevideo. He was also the technical director of the Oficina Nacional de Planeamiento del Uruguay from 1961 to 1965 .

Iglesias, who belongs to the Partido Nacional , was then president of the Banco Central del Uruguay from 1967 to 1968 . He also held the position of Executive Secretary in the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) from 1972 to 1985 . From 1985 to 1988 he was Foreign Minister of Uruguay and from 1988 to 2005 he was President of the Inter-American Development Bank . Since 2005 he has been Secretary General of the Ibero-American Alliance .
