Luis Leonardo Almagro Lemes (born June 1, 1963 in Cerro Chato , Paysandú Department ) is a Uruguayan politician .

Career

Luis Almagro, who was an avid runner at a young age and finished fourth in a competition at national level, studied law at the Universidad de la República and graduated in 1987 with the title of lawyer. He also attended the Diplomatic Academy at the Instituto Artigas del Servicio Exterior . Originally associated with the Partido Nacional , he was involved in the final phase of the civil-military dictatorship in its Divisa Blanca and later in the Movimiento Nacional de Rocha . From 1991 to 1996 he worked in the Uruguayan embassy in Iran. He was then entrusted with the performance of tasks in the Uruguayan embassy in Germany from 1998 to 2003 . In that period he turned towards the left political spectrum of Uruguay in the late 1990s and in 1999 joined the Movimiento de Participación Popular as an expert on international affairs. This was followed by a job in the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries ("Ministerio de Ganadería, Agricultura y Pesca"). In December 2006 he was appointed ambassador of Uruguay to China with 21 of 22 votes. Almagro held the post of Foreign Minister in the government of President José Mujica as successor to Pedro Vaz since March 1, 2010 . He exercised this until March 1, 2015. In the 2014 elections, he was elected to the Cámara de Senadores . On March 18, 2015, he received 33 votes out of 34 with one abstention in the election for General Secretary of the Organization of American States, succeeding José Miguel Insulza in this position .

Private

Almagro's first marriage was to an official in the Foreign Ministry. The marriage was divorced during his professional life in Germany. His second marriage was to Marianne Birkholtz, a South African employee of the United Nations Environment Program. He is the father of seven children named Eloisa, Leandro, Jan, Sara, Emily, Leonardo and Benjamín.
