Luis Brezzo

Luis Andres Brezzo Paredes (born March 20, 1939 in Montevideo , † September 20, 2002 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician and journalist.

Luis Brezzo studied at the engineering faculty ("Facultad de Ingeniería") of the Universidad de la República . The union leader of the Asociación de Empleados Bancarios del Uruguay (AEBU) worked as a journalist for the newspapers Acción , Hechos and Nuevo El Plata .

Brezzo, who belonged to the Partido Colorado and, within it, to the Foro Batllista sector , began his political career after the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay was overcome in 1985. From March 1985 to April 1988 he was National Labor Director (Director Nacional de Trabajo) during the reign of Sanguinetti and for a short period of time held the position of Vice-President of Banco La Caja Obrera . He was Minister for Labor and Social Security from June 5, 1989 to March 1, 1990. He then held a titular mandate as senator in the Cámara de Senadores in the 44th (for the lista 2000 ) and 45th legislative periods from February 15, 1995 to March 1, 2000 . In 1997 he was first Vice President of the Senate. From August 24, 1999 to February 14, 2000, Brezzo took over the management of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries. During the current 45th legislative period, he was appointed Minister of Defense of Uruguay on March 1, 2000 in the government of President Jorge Batlle . He died in the sanatorium of the Asociación Española during his tenure as a result of cancer. Brezzo was buried at the Cementerio del Buceo .

Brezzo was married to Alma Onetti de Brezzo and had two children named Ana and Eduardo and three grandchildren Carlos, Luis and Felipe.
