Morales only painted religious subjects that expressed an intense piety, which earned him the popular nickname El Divino . King Philip II of Spain , who invited him to participate in the furnishing of the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial , displeased Morales "Christ" and he dismissed him. His style was influenced by the Italian masters, particularly Leonardo da Vinci , and is essentially mannerist . His most important work consists of twenty panels on the life of Christ, which he painted between 1563 and 1568 for the church of Arroyo del Puerco .
