history

In 1862, Franz Schoenfeld founded the artist paint and canvas factory Dr. Ms. Schoenfeld in Düsseldorf. Since 1829 his father had run a specialty shop for artist materials across from the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Franz Schoenfeld studied in Giessen and Heidelberg. At the age of 20, he received his doctorate in philosophy. In 1896 he chose the location opposite the artists' association Malkasten for a new company headquarters . Production started with watercolors .

In 1900, "Sankt Lukas", the patron saint of painters, gave the name to the products from Dr. Ms. Schoenfeld. The logo, designed by the painter Eduard Gebhardt and adapted to contemporary tastes and graphic trends over the years, also refers to it. In 1907 Paul Schoenfeld took over the management of the company from his father and handed it over to his nephew Eduard Talbot in 1919. In 1957 his daughter Christa Heusgen-Talbot became the successor.

In 1960 the company moved to a new building on the outskirts of the city of Düsseldorf. Artist acrylic paints have been available since 1964 . Hubertus Heusgen, the founder's great-great-great-nephew, heads the company from 1998 until 2016.

At the beginning of 2013, Lukas Nerchau Farben was taken over by the British company Daler-Rowney and has been part of the Italian FILA Group since 2016 .
