In 1957, a team on the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions sighted the ridge and named it after the Norwegian cartographer Bernhard Luncke (1894–1963), who was instrumental in mapping the Vestfold Mountains for the Atlas over dele av det Antarctic kystland from 1946 was involved.
