Lunzjata Fountain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lunzjata Fountain ( Maltese Għajn il-Kbir ) is a stone fountain in the Lunzjata Valley near Kerċem on the island of Gozo, which belongs to Malta .

The fountain was built in 1698 by Ercole Martino Testaferrata, who had been commissioned by the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Ramon Perellos y Roccaful, to draw a natural spring at this point. For centuries the fountain served the Gozitans to draw drinking water in this part of the valley. In 2007 the stone fountain of Dín l-Art Ħelwa was restored.

The stone shows a Latin inscription and two coats of arms. Above is the coat of arms of Ercole Testaferrata, below that of Grand Master Perellos.
