Luther cemetery
The Luther cemetery , also called Lutherkirchhof , is a Protestant cemetery in the Lankwitz district of the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf . It is named after the reformer Martin Luther .
location
The Luther cemetery is located immediately north of the neighboring Kreuz cemetery in the southeast of the Lankwitz district at Malteserstraße 113–121 and is around 37,000 square meters in size. At its south-western end, it can be entered via the end of Tambacher Straße .
The cemetery originally belonged to the Evangelical Luther Church Community in Schöneberg , to which the property was sold in 1900 by the then Lankwitz community.
The green main Berlin hiking trail number 5, the north-south path , leads directly over the Luther cemetery.
layout
A monumental gateway with a wrought iron cross on the gable draws attention to the entrance to the cemetery. The cemetery chapel is on the right and the administration building on the left. The entire ensemble , created in 1902 by the architect Jürgen Kröger , is a listed building .
Despite being a listed building, this cemetery is also breaking new ground. In the shadow of the cemetery chapel, columbaria were created in the open air. This area of the cemetery is continuously being expanded. The funeral ceremonies for funerals in the neighboring Kreuz cemetery also take place in the chapel of the Luther cemetery.
The cemetery is characterized by old trees and numerous large rhododendrons ; the transition to the Kreuz-Friedhof is almost imperceptible or fluid. Due to the quiet location and the island function in the urban environment, both cemeteries, like the inner-city cemeteries in general, are of great importance for the biodiversity and the existence of the bird world, especially for nesting songbirds .
