The Luther beech is a beech tree west of the city of Stolberg (Harz) in the city of Südharz in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt .

The tree, reminiscent of the reformer Martin Luther , stands at the top of a mountain slope southwest of the city. In the spring of 1525, Martin Luther stayed with his friend Reiffenstein in Stolberg. According to tradition, on the Friday after Easter, April 21, 1525, both of them went for a walk on the mountains surrounding Stolberg. The beech marks the point from which both of them looked out over the city. Luther compared the cityscape with a bird, according to which Stolberg Castle is the head, the market square is the body and the three streets leading to the market are the wings and the tail. This poetic image is still often quoted today. Due to the narrow valleys in which Stolberg is located, the urban structure has not changed significantly until today. In fact, there are still 18 half-timbered houses from the time before 1530 in Stolberg, which also shaped the townscape in Luther's time.

Blackboard on the beech

The beech itself does not come from this period. The city of Stolberg has, however, planted a new beech tree at this point, which is right on the edge of a forest that is largely characterized by beech trees.

On the current book there is a wooden plaque on which the reference to Luther is explained. There it says: “When in 1525, on the Friday after Easter, Dr. Martin Luther visited Stolberg and walked up this mountain with his friend Reiffenstein, he even correctly compared the city of Stolberg to a bird. He said the castle would be the head, the market would be the fuselage, the two streets would be the wings, the lower street would be the tail ” .

The Luther beech is included as no. 216 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin.
