history

Stereoscopy No. 659 as a postcard , Knackstedt & Näther Verlag , around 1900
Its oldest component, the round tower, dates from around 1200, the newer parts were built in the Renaissance style between 1539 and 1547 according to the plans of Andreas Günther. In the south-east wing are the classicist large reception room and the red hall based on a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The castle got its present appearance through renovations between 1690 and 1700. The former fortifications were converted into gardens. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the rooms on the upper floor received new historical furnishings. Until the expropriation in 1945, the castle was owned by the Fürst zu Stolberg-Stolberg family .
From 1947 the castle was used as an FDGB vacation home. Conversions carried out for this purpose and numerous guests left extensive traces in the structure and appearance of the interior of the facility. In 1990 the castle became the property of the Treuhand and was then empty. A private investor bought it in 1993 to open a hotel there. Inadequate roof renovation work resulted in moisture and sponge damage . After the hotel project failed in 1994, Stolberg Castle stood empty again and threatened to be completely lost. At the end of 2002, the German Foundation for Monument Protection took over the building following an agreement with the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The building structure was secured and gradually renovated .
Parts of the castle have been open to the public again since March 2008 and are used as a tourist center and "House of the Guest" as well as a museum . Together with the German Foundation for Monument Protection, this ensures that the monument is permanently maintained and secured. The palace chapel was inaugurated again in 2009 and the palace garden and the south wing have been accessible again since 2010 . The palace garden was recognized as one of the most outstanding facilities in the state as part of the garden dreams - historical parks in Saxony-Anhalt tourism project .
Until 2008, around 12 million euros in funding from the federal government, the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the European Union , the city of Stolberg and the German Foundation for Monument Protection were used to repair the buildings. The Ritter von Kempski Private Hotels are involved in this great project with the establishment and operation of an event and conference hotel .
