The Luther Monument is a memorial in honor of the reformer Martin Luther in front of the Kaufmannskirche auf dem Anger in the center of the city of Erfurt in Thuringia .

Luther lived in Erfurt between 1501 and 1511, studied at the University of Erfurt and was a monk in the Augustinian monastery , which is why he had close ties to the city. At the suggestion of the State Assembly of the Evangelical Federation in Erfurt in 1881, a Luther Monument Association was founded in the Luther year 1883, which collected donations for the construction of the monument. The memorial was finally made after a model by the well-known Berlin sculptor Fritz Schaper , it cost 72,000 marks . On October 30, 1889, the eve of Reformation Day , the six-meter-high monument was finally inaugurated. The location next to the Kaufmannskirche was chosen because Luther had settled a denominational dispute with a sermon there on October 22, 1522.

The statue shows the reformer with the open Bible in his left hand. However, the right does not point to a specific scriptural passage, but only reaches for the book. The facial expression is less instructive and confessing than it is discovering and amazed - just as it may have read and learned in Erfurt. The base shows three stations from the life of the reformer: Luther as a student, Luther's entry into the monastery and the festive reception at the university on April 6, 1521. The front shows the Bible verse “I will not die, but live and proclaim the Lord's work ".
