Lutold (St. Gallen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lutold was from 1077 to around 1083 the abbot of the St. Gallen monastery . Nothing is known about life before and after his work in St. Gallen. He is absent from the oldest abbot lists.

Act

During the dispute over the investiture controversy, the rival king Rudolf of Swabia appointed Lutold as abbot of the St. Gallen monastery in 1077 . However , he was not accepted by the St. Gallen monks who took the position for Henry IV . In a symbolic action, they broke the abbot's staff and thus referred to the illegality of his abbot dignity. In September 1077 the influence of Henry IV was so great that he appointed Ulrich von Eppenstein as abbot. Lutold then fled to Reichenau Monastery . New attempts to install the counter-abbot Lutold in St. Gallen were unsuccessful. In 1083, the counter-king Hermann von Salm appointed the Reichenau monk Werinhar as counter-abbot in St. Gallen in place of Lutold .
