Luxembourg is a chair model. The model, which is used to furnish gardens and parks, has been in production since 2003 and is the successor to the Senate . Originally designed for the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century , it can now be found in parks around the world. Fermob's chairs have been manufactured in Lyon since 2003.

history

The Senate chair was designed in the 1920s by the Ateliers de la Ville de Paris, the municipal workshops of Paris, for the Jardin du Luxembourg, which is also home to the French Senate . Manufactured for the Senate, the latter commissioned the French manufacturer Fermob to manufacture the chairs in 1990. In 2002 he commissioned the designer Frederic Sofia to redesign the chair. Sofia tried to keep the classic design, but to make it more ergonomic and comfortable than the old model.

Manufacturing

The chairs are manufactured in the Fermob factory in Lyon . While the Senate chair was still made of steel, Luxembourg is made of aluminum. For use in the Jardin du Luxembourg, a steel version will continue to be produced and awarded the "Senate" label. Both the backrest and seat are made of curved slats, the other parts are made of tubes. While the classic chairs in the Jardin du Luxembourg have been colored an inconspicuous green since the 1920s, Fermob manufactures the chairs in a total of 24 colors.

reception

The Luxembourg chair has been part of the collection of the Fonds national d'art contemporain since 2008 .

The Senate was the object of a photo collage by David Hockney ( hair (Jardin de Luxembourg in Paris on August 10, 1985) , 1985) and a photo by André Kertész . Hockney first published the collage in French Vogue

Luxembourg can now be found in various parks and museums around the world. Among other things, he is a central part of an installation at the Oakland Museum of California . The Harvard University has the chairs in their outdoor area, as well as in the park of her Art Institute of Chicago and before the Architectural Institute of the Technical University of Delft . In Germany, for example, they are on the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart.
