Lycoderides is a genus of humpback chirps from the subfamily of Stegaspidinae .
features
The Lycoderides chirps are approx. 5 to 10 mm long and have a very differently shaped pronotum, usually with a flat tip pointing forward, sometimes leaf-shaped, often with a backward-pointing outgrowth that can also be wavy. In some species the pronotum is broad with lateral tips. Often there is a strong sexual dimorphism, which makes the identification of the species even more difficult. The color is mostly brown. The head is covered with fine hair, the pronotum is sculpted and dotted.
Lycoderides brulei has a line on the pronotum where it can easily break off, this is interpreted as a predetermined breaking point for the autotomy .
distribution
The species of Lycoderides are known from the following countries: Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Venezuela, French Guyana, Rep. Guyana, Suriname, Panama, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica and Ecuador.
biology
Little is known about the biology, the larvae of most species have not yet been described, but some have been observed in groups and together with ants. The adult cicada come individually before and suck sap to plants of the family Melastomaceae .
Systematics
At present 23 species from the Neotropic are known from this genus . The genus Lycoderes in 1972 into the two subgenera Lycoderes and Lycoderides divided, apply now both as an independent, closely related genera. They differ mainly in the veining of the forewings.
