Lyngoksen is an uninhabited island in Fedjefjorden in the municipality Austrheim in Norwegian Fylke Vestland . The peat layer on Lyngoksen is unusually thick, which makes the island stand out from islands like Fosnøyna and Radøy . Even on the hills of Lyngoksen there are several places with peat up to two meters thick. Peat that covers the entire landscape is known as "land cover peat".

Lyngoksen has long been covered in heather, bog and peat. Finds from early farmers on the coast of Hordaland were found in the peat. The forest on the island was cleared as early as the Neolithic . The heather moor that was created is one of the oldest in Hordaland. Deforestation resulted in a reduction in the level of evaporation on the surface. This led to the formation of extensive peat bogs.

The quality of the peat is top notch. Therefore, the peat extraction on the island was extensive. The bogs in autumn also have abundant harvests of cranberries , which are used to make juice and jam.

It is practical for the farmers to keep their animals on the island. Fences are not required and the risk of attack by predators is much lower than on the mainland. With the heather burning down and careful use of the pasture land, there is enough food available for the animals all year round.
