Lyonel Trouillot (born December 31, 1956 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) is a Haitian writer who works as a poet , journalist , songwriter , essayist , editor and novelist .

Life

Lyonel Trouillot came from the upper Haitian middle class. His father was a professor of literature and Lyonel grew up with literature. He began studying law and then decided to become a writer.

Due to the repression of the government of Jean-Claude Duvalier , he left Haiti in the 1980s and went into exile in the USA . He later became a spokesman for the oppositional-intellectual movement Collectif Non , which opposed the dictatorial ambitions of Jean-Bertrand Aristide .

He wrote for various Haitian newspapers and was a co-founder of magazines such as Lakansyel and Tem et Langay . He has also been a songwriter for several well-known Haitian singers.

Trouillot endeavors to encourage young authors. He supports the literature workshop “Ateliers du jeudi soir”, where young writers can present texts and receive advice from experienced authors. In 2011 he founded the “Anne-Marie Morisset” cultural center. He is editor of the literary magazine Demembre , which publishes contributions by young authors.

Trouillot's literature is socially critical and questions, for example, the role of aid organizations in the 2010 earthquake or the abysses of Haitian politics.

Trouillot lives in Port-au-Prince and teaches Creole and French literature there as a professor. He writes in French, not Haitian Creole ( kreyole ) . In 2011 his novel La belle amour humaine was nominated for the prestigious Prix ​​Goncourt .

family

His sister Evelyne Trouillot is a well-known poet and novelist in Haiti. Other relatives are his uncle, the historian Henock Trouillot, his brother, the political scientist Michel-Rolph Trouillot and another sister, the children's book author Jocelyne Trouillot.
